WK15-Artist Interview-Hyeri Kim

This week, my favorite artwork is chosen from “His Extravagant Proposal” gallery, B.F.A Graduation Show by Hyeri Kim. The title of the artwork is called “The Bouquet” 5*5*4.75in, made by copper, brass, and liver of sulfur.

When I saw this artwork, I think it is very beautiful, and elegant; but there’s one little thing is the white roses in the container is half dried, and I’m not sure if it is made on purpose, or just the flower isn’t fresh anymore because it has been there too long. According to the artist statement, the show, and the artworks are trying to tell the viewers that falling in love is one of the most magnificent experience in life. The purposes is to give people an experience to deeply though about the definition of love. Also remind people what it feels like? How it happens? And someone special you spend the time with.

Wk13-Artist interview-Jeff Dulla

This week, the artwork I picked is called “Cyclical Natural”, which is made by oil on canvas, “96*5.5”, by Jeff Dulla.

When I first saw it, it remind me about a Japanese painting called “The Great Wave off Kanagawa”, I feel somehow their styles are similar to each other. But then after I stared it for a little while, I think this paintings color is more dark, very gloomy, and creepy. The color in this painting is weird, usually the sun should be red, but in the painting the sun is light pink, and the land also in different strange colors, which are dark blue and grey mixed together. In this painting everything is also connected, and the whole things looks like a evil world, and it makes feel it will only appear in the nightmares.

According to the statement, this artwork is contains a strong passion and diverse, it is totally came out from a individual vision. it presents a range of approaches vital to contemporary painting genre today, which includes representational responses to the landscape.

WK12-Artist Interview-Henry David Thoreau

This week, the artwork I picked it a pencil painting “16×20”, which is made by Henry David Thoreau, the title is called “Class”.

I like the style of this artwork is because it looks so cute, just like a comic. The meaning of it is also very obvious, there is an old lady with a crutch stand at the back center of the room watching and teaching children how to dance. There is a man who sit in front of a big piano playing the music, the old lady should be the main character in this piece of artwork, because she looks kind mean from the way she hold her position, and also from her huge reflection of her body shadow, which makes her seems very lonely, and inaccessible.

From the artist statement, I learned that when she was little, she grew up in a princesses, and power rangers; play time, potty time, and reading time. Her artworks inspiration are all basically comes from the memories when she was little. Henry states that when she was young, and always dreamed about everything that she could do if she get older; but now, she suddenly realized that things from her childhood time can be never come back. She want to show her artworks to remind everyone to roll down the window, close the eyes, and dream. These dreams can paint riot of color on an otherwise gloomy day.

WK11-Artist Interview-Wesley Hick

In this week, the artwork I picked is made by Wesley Hicks, and the artwork is made out of ceramics, conceal with paint and mixed media.

When I saw it, the shape of the artwork looks like a special building, but in the same time it keep make me think about food, because the whole thing also really looks like dessert, maybe pies with melting Ice-cream. To me, the artwork is also very color, just like candy, something delicious. According to Wesley Hicks statement, his art is the reflected back at the world through a crazy mirror, in contemplating this idea, he create art if an unknown origin with only the way he present and arrange them as the context of what they are. Also the work contains imperfections and inconsistencies that have been painted over to further impede viewers from u standing their intended function and original state.

This artwork is untitled, made in 2014, oil on canvas. I think this is an amazing oil painting, when I saw it painting, it grabbed my whole attention. Cpmpared with other paintings in the sam gallery room, this is the best one I would like to talk about for this week. The painitng makes me keep think about the roses, and the color is also very awesome color which looks very soft. Yee Li used different color of red makes the whole painting looks like a  ‎three-dimensional. According to her statement,  her inspiration come fron the exploring anxiety and fear through spatial representation. The spaces can influence the way we react the moment of trepidation, and the spaces can also interpreted literally psychologically, emotionally, and mentally depending on an individual’s perspective.
